It’s back to MAJOR MACABRE this issue, as the COH focus fixes on the bizarre horror comics produced by the infamous Iger Shop. This go-around, we will feature material from a pair of Iger-supplied titles published by bottom-feeding Ajax/Farrel; Haunted Thrills and Strange Mysteries. Seven stories in all, including “Frigid Fear”, “Wheel of Terror”, “Dying Is Contagious”, “Death Is The Jury”, “Trumpet of Doom”, and “The Black Flame”. Other than one that is clearly drawn by Bob Webb, we can’t even GUESS who may have illustrated the rest, considering the standatd Iger “house style” used on them- but they are all really, REALLY freaky!! A LOT higher up on the scale of production values, this volume also contains a number of Avon Publications terror tales (out of their original Eerie and Strange Worlds books) with art by Rocke Mastroserio, Norman Nodel, Gene Fawcette and others on adventures like “The End of HIs Service”, “The Abduction of the Earth”, and three others. But there’s plenty more beyond that, with superb suspenseful scaries from St. John, Charlton, Prize, Fawcett and others (including THREE stories illustrated by the great Bob Powell- “The Man In The Cell”, “The Other Me” and “The Shadows On The Screen”) including Ditko’s “Live For Reunion”, Dick Ayers’ “The Man Who Could Do Anything” and “The Little Black Box”, Mort Meskin’s “Hoofbeats of the Devil’s Horse” and so many more. 22 full stories- all great 1950’s horror comics-140 pages in total, crystal clear black and white with color covers, $29.95 fom AC Comics, coming in October 2015. Crypt of Horror Volume 27- preorder your copy at your local comic book retailer from the August 2015 issue of Diamond Previews.

When you say “Ghost Rider” to a contemporary fan, the image of the motorcycle-riding dude with the flaming skull immediately comes to mind- and why not? It’s been a hugely-successful character for Marvel Entertainment in comics and movies. But, decades before; there was ANOTHER Ghost Rider in comic books- from Vin Sullivan’s Magazine Enterprises line of comics, in the 1950’s. It was a unique synthesis of elements from the costumed hero motif, the horror realm, AND the Western setting, and ran successfully in a number of M.E. titles between 1950 and 1955. Most of the GR stories were scripted by the legendary Gardner Fox- a longtime friend of M.E. publisher Sullivan, and ALL of the stories were drawn by the great Dick Ayers. In it’s day this moody, stylish and well-realized strip was a great favorite of a young reader who eventually grew up to be AC Comics publisher Bill Black. Flash forward thirty years, and Black tracks down M.E. Publisher Sullivan and receives permission to use M. E. material at AC, thus beginning a long relationship between the character and the company that eventually brought Dick Ayers to AC to produce a number of memorable stories in the ’90’s. In order to avoid confusion and conflict with Marvel’s legitimate trafemark on the character name “Ghost Rider”, AC reprints were slightly edited to rename the character Haunted Horseman, and under that monicker AC printed more than seventy of the M.E. GR stories over the years. This volume collects the very BEST of those reprinted stories, RE-EDITED BACK to bearing the Ghost Rider name, just as they were originally seen in the 1950’s. These stories (not seen ANYWHERE previously other than Magazine Enterprises and AC Comics) include “GHOST OF LONGHAIR JOHN”, “FREAKS OF FEAR”, “NO LAW IN LITTLE BEND”, “MAN FROM SCOTLAND YARD”, “THE TALKING HEAD”, “HANGMAN’S TOWN”, “THE BEAUTIFUL WITCH”, “BOOK OF DOOM”, “SHADOW SLAYERS”, “GREEN MEN FROM HORO”, “TO TOUCH IS TO DIE”, “PHANTOM GUNS OF FEATHER GAP”, “HORROR OF DEADMAN’S CAVE”, “HORNS OF HORROR”, “THE FIERY PRISON”, “MAGICO”, “RETURN OF MAGICO”, “COFFIN OF SNOW”, “THE DEVIL DEALS IN DEATH” and lots more, including text from AC Editorial Master of Ceremonies Bill Black about the history of the character at M.E. and AC, AND a “modern” story done by Black and iconic artist Dick Ayers in the 1990’s!! In all it’s a superb 140 page collection of classic “original” Ghost Rider material, in crystal-clear black and white, with full color covers, for $29.95, available from AC Comics in October, 2015
