3-D Effect Issue!! The 3-D movie was all the rage in the early 1950′s, when RedMask (the fictional costumed identity of real-life western movie star Tim Holt )artist Frank Bolle approached Magazine Enterprises editor Ray Krank with an idea to try to use conventional drawing techiques on comic book pages to simulate 3-D-by implementing extreme perspective, and drawing figures and elements breaking panel borders. Krank liked it, and Bolle instituted the approach on M. E.’s RedMask #39, and used it ’till the end of the book’s run. All this stories in this AC Comics classic reprint edition use Bolle’s simulated 3-D look, including “The Purple Glove Gang”, originally seen in RedMask #51, with art by Frank Bolle; “Death At Split Mesa”, from RedMask #44, drawn by Bolle; “The Outlaw Bronc”, from RedMask #45, drawn by Bolle, and even on the Red Hawk story, “The Man Who Rode The Moonlight”, from Straight Arrow #10, drawn by Bob Powell. Color cover, interiors are black and white with graytones. 28 pages, standard comic book format. Printed in 1992.

After looking at this issue and RedMask 3 Frank Bolle leapt to the top of the pack of Golden Age artists for me. Just as promised, 3D without glasses. Too bad he didn’t use this effect much with the Black Phantom!

Yeah, she was made for 3-D!! Magazine Enterprises planned a second issue for BP but it never came out. They did advertise the cover art and a solo PB story was eventually used in REDMASK.
