Description

This is the actual, vintage Golden Age comic book published by Harry “A” Chesler (listed as Service Publishing Co.) in Spring, 1945. This 64 page comic is complete, although both the cover and centerfold are loose. Most Chesler publications are rare due to the companies’ spotty distribution, and this book is no exception. Cover star superhero Major Victory appears in the lead story illustrated by George Tuska and Charles Sultan (imitating Lou Fine) , followed by another costumed adventuer, Dynamic Boy. Other features include “Red” Herring, Sgt. Bell, The Unholy Three, and K-9. I am not a professional comic grader, I am simply selling some comics out of my collection, so I’m going to list this books’ defects as best I can. Please check the photos that go with this listing for more details on it’s relative condition. The front cover was stapled slightly off-center, and has only slight gloss. There is some slight chipping in the red area right along the spine, particularly in the areas where the staples were driven. Three shallow (1/16″) tears down along the top of the cover, above the M in “Major”, and a crease (though with no “white” showing) across the upper right corner of the cover, running 3/4″ in from the right down to 1″ down from the top. Also one more 1/4″ tear in along the right side about halfway down that edge. Their is no other major damage to the front cover, though it has taken substantial handling so it has a lot of weak creasing through it. There is a 2″ strip of invisible tape running along the area of the top staple on the inside of the cover, apparently an attempted “repair” at some point. Interior pages are a little loose from each other, although the staples are still through all interior pages except the centerfold. Interiors have some slight browning of the paper, and a darkish stain around the top staple area. There is a name-stamp along the bottom of the first page of a previous owner, “Roger Woods”. There are a few minor (1/16″ 1/8″) tears into the interior pages along the right edge, and the right edge of the centerfold (which apparently has been loose for some time) has gotten a bit ragged through handling. Other than that, there is no real damage to the interior pages. Back cover is a bit ragged along the top and left side, and there is an irregular 3″ tear into the back cover from the left side with invisble tape over it (on the outside of the back cover) as an attempted repair. Other than that, the cover is reasonably clean, though well-handled. A complete copy of a very rare book.
