Description

This is the actual, vintage Golden Age comic book published by the Quality Comics Group in June, 1943. This 64 page comic is complete, a prime example of one of the longest-running, most successful titles of the Golden Age of comics. It started out reprinting popular newspaper strips like Mickey Finn and Lala Palooza (both of whom appear in this issue), eventually metamorphasizing into a showcase for Quality’s original costumed and adventure features like the Doll Man, Spider Widow, Rusty Ryan, Swing Sisson, Spin Shaw and Zero. I am not a professional comic grader, I am simply selling some comics out of my collection, so I’m going to list this books’ defects as best I can. Please check the photos that go with this listing for more details on it’s relative condition. The cover, beautifully drawn by the great Al Bryant (which has come loose from the staples) has a bit of gloss left, as well as a little dirt smudging on the white and yellow areas of it. Across the top of the cover are chew marks ( insects? rats?) that cut irregularly down into the character boxes, 1/8″ to 1/2″ down. The top right corner (1/2″ X 3/4″) of the cover is chewed completely away, with more small random chews all the way through the white area just to the right of the “E” in Feature. Right edge of the cover stays pretty solid and smooth until about 1 1/2″ up from the bottom right corner where that entire corner is eaten away up to a 1/2″ in from the right edge. The rest of the bottom edge is completely sound right up to the spine. There are also chew holes through the spine around the staples about 1 1/2″ inches by 1/4″ to 1/2″ wide- that’s why the cover has come loose from the rest of the book. Interiors have very little paper browning, but their is some faint yellowish staining along the spine and top and bottom (as well as a little along the trim side) which may be related to the chewed areas . This discoloration does not actually inpinge on any of the interior art, however. There are also tears coming in from the spine at the single staple point which affects the first 7 pages of the book, and an irregular 1″ X 1/4″ chunk out of the 4th page along the right edge. Also some brownish staining on the laast interior page about 1″ in from the spine and 6″ down from the top. Despite all the other issues the top and bottom right corners are pretty square. The back cover top and bottom also shows similar irregular chew marks like the front cover, and the spine chew issues spill over onto the back cover at the spinr. There is also a 3/4″ X 1/2″ chunk out of the back cover at the spine. It’s a rough copy coverwise, but it is complete- and a possibly affordable way to own a copy of what would normally be a pretty expensive book.

Digital Comics

We have experimented with digital comics, but we have no interest in pursuing digital comics any further at this time. Since we actually need the sales of comic books to keep publishing (and have virtually no ancillary products with our characters on them like the corporate conglomerate comics), we are still relying on physical comics sales through comics shops worldwide through Diamond Distribution.

Sheena, Queen of the Jungle was done with the approval of the rights holder Paul Aratow, who bought the rights doing the Sheena movie in the 1980's. Bill Black and Mark G. Heike did an award winning promotional comic book for Roy Rogers/Hardee's as a freelance project. Mark G. Heike and Stephanie Heike did the Calgary Stampede adventures comic book. Submission Guidelines for AC Comics

Submission Guidelines

For Pencillers, Inkers, Letterers and Colorists:

We really love and appreciate getting enthusiastic artist submissions from potential freelancers, including pencillers, inkers, letterers and colorists wanting to do comic books, but please DO NOT send ANY attachments to this email address.

If you have your art posted somewhere online on a site that you could send us a link to, that would be great!

Please email links to your artwork posted somewhere online (for example, on a showcase/gallery website  or a dropbox/wesendit/etc.. file  to show off your artwork)  and we'll check them out.

We would like you to be able to demonstrate some ability to produce reasonably effective comic book continuity ( Six or seven pages utilizing multiple panels telling a story or sequence of a story) with attractive people/superheroes/superheroines.

Ideally, we would like to see four or five of those pages with depictions of mundane everyday scenes to give us an idea of the quality of the comic artwork by itself before we make a decision to move the discussion along.

We are looking for sequential storytelling in comic book art. We've gotten several people sending us "paintings" lately --static, digitally over-rendered  generic straight-on shots of individual characters and being indignant when we've told them "No, this is wrong." We want to see comic book artwork.

While we do not strictly have a "House Style", we do prefer material that will lend itself to "classic American style comic books".  If you can draw attractive people using sequential storytelling , we can probably find a place somewhere your material will work.

  • Pencils: should be sequential and un-inked--if you have  inked samples of your pencils, please include both the inked and the UN-inked pages.
  • Inks: Samples should be sequential pages--if you have  inked samples, please include both the inked and the UN-inked pencilled pages.
  • Color: Color should be directed towards print publication.  We would like to see samples of included of both  finished tones with special FX and preliminary flats.
  • Lettering:  Should have some basic display samples as well as balloon lettering.  Show that you can handle standard comic book dialogue and sound FX. (We do not use lower case fonts unless a character is whispering!)
